Pointers

Mission: Death is in the Details
Location: Holodeck 1

Petty Officer Tarn, a bolian rushed the klingon with a Bet'leth in his hands and swung the sword at the Klingon who dodged the strike, striking Tarn with the blunt edge of Bet'leth , knocking him to the ground as the Klingon followed through as the holographic blade "pierced" into Tarn's chest.

T'Pral walked over to Tarn, still lying on his back on the ground as the Klingon vanished from sight. "Congratulations, Petty Officer, Tarn. You are now dead. Your attack was sloppy and ill-planned." T'Pral then looked at the gathered group of security officers. "From my observations, you are good with energy-based range weapons but there are times that will call for you to engage the enemy in hand to hand combat or with melee weapons. In the previous away team, Petty Officer De'Ath, Crewmen Dover, and O'Shea all perished because they encountered an enemy that was not conventional."

As if to emphasize this point, another trainee was knocked off his feet by an invisible force, and in the span of a blink Nexi was standing over him with the blade of her pike pressed against his neck.

"And it's not enough to merely be prepared for the unconventional, you must always be on guard, even on the Hera," the Brekkian woman cautioned. She pulled the blade away from the trainee's neck and offered him a hand up. "Sorry to bust in on your lesson, thought you could use some help," Nexi said to T'Pral.

T'Pral nodded. "Your help would be beneficial.". She then turned to the group. "This is Nexi, an Intelligence Infiltration Specialist aboard the Hera. You would be wise to listen to her. As Nexi said, do not relax your guard even aboard the ship."

"And notice I don't wear a Starfleet uniform. Yet. I have a rather unique skill set that comes from my former line of work that Captain Telvan has seen fit to make use of, and I don't want none of you tryna pull rank 'cause I'm a civvie contractor, I will drop your ass to the deck plating just as easily as I did him," Nexi cautioned, pointing a thumb at the crewman she drew her weapon on earlier. "A lot of what I used to do involves patience and thinking outside the box; sometimes to find an opening, whether it's in a fight or infiltrating a location, you gotta wait for the right moment to act, like hiding out in an air duct for a week to wait for the right hole in a guard rotation so your presence remains unnoticed. This is a hard concept for some people to grasp, especially when you're in a hectic situation, like taking enemy fire, but rushing in can get you killed."

"Always try to make your opponent make the first move," T'Pral stated. "That is enough today. You are all dismissed." T'Pral watched the group leave the holodeck before turning to Nexi. "You are quite skilled and I would appreciate it if you could help out in training whenever possible."

"Yeah, Cato mentioned that you could use a hand. Sorry, Chief West, fuck, I'm still getting used to the whole 'duty formality' thing," Nexi replied, collapsing her pike staff and tucking the blade in its sheath at the small of her back. "But you seemed to have the right idea, tryna prepare them for what's ahead; I can help you plan a few simulations to give them an idea of the kind of missions we've done."

"I would appreciate that. In regards to rank formality, you are not Starfleet and do not need to address Chief West by his rank. Call him whatever you'd like," T'Pral grinned.

"How about 'arrogant ass'?" Nexi said with a chuckle. "Nah, I shouldn't do that, I'm trying to enlist, so I need to get into the right kind of habits or I'll never get accepted," she added with a sheepish grin. "Anyway, I'll swing by your office sometime to work on those simulations with you. My schedule is kind of all over the place, so let me know when is a good time for you."

T'Pral nodded. "I will do that. Why are you enlisting in Starfleet if you don't mind me asking?"

"Lots of reasons, mostly personal ones," Nexi said, not feeling much like going into details at the moment.

"I see. The reasons are your own, then, as long as they are good ones," T'Pral said before grinning. "Care for some sparring?"

"Normally, I'd love to, but sparring for me usually doesn't end until both opponents are good and bloody, and since I have somewhere I need to be soon, probably not a good idea to show up looking all beat up, so I'll pass for now," Nexi said with some amusement. "But next time, definitely," she affirmed with a grin.

"I will look forward to it," T'Pral said. "Computer, end program." She then turned to Nexi and nodded. "Good day, Nexi." She then made her way to the exit.

"I look forward to it too," Nexi affirmed, then headed out.
