Time Travel

Mission: Temporal Kickback
Location: Commander Telvan's Ready Room
Timeline: After Checking the Logs

Lieutenant Commander Sinek had spent several hours researching time travel. The Commander had mentioned the Sling Shot Maneuver, which was first accomplished by the Enterprise in Captain Kirk's days. However, the maneuver created great stress on a starship. Sinek had an idea, which may get them back to their own time with less stress.

The turbo-lift arrived at the bridge. Sinek walked straight and with purpose to the Commander's ready room. He gave a tug to his uniform top, ensuring it was crisp and clean, without creases or wrinkles. In uniform, one had to look his sharpest. He pushed the chime and quietly awaited the command to enter.

"Enter," came the command, the doors sliding open to reveal the Captain at her desk, still poring over a mountain of PaDDs. "Please tell me you have good news, Commander."

Sinek remained until he strode to just before her desk. "Indeed Captain Telvan, I believe I have an answer for our dilemma." He paused to ensure her attention moved from the pile of PaDDs to him. Those of other races seemed at times not to channel their attention; they seemed easily distracted at times.

When Sinek knew her attention was directed toward him, he continued. "Are you familiar with the effects of electromagnetism upon time travel?"

Setting her PaDDs down, Enalia leaned back in her chair and focussed her attention on Sinek. "Several hours ago I knew really only one thing about time travel. Avoid it at all costs. Now? I'm not sure I know much more..."

"I have spent the last few hours studying the experimentations of two individuals on electromagnetism and time travel," Sinek reported, standing, ready to move forward. "The first was a 20th century earth scientist named Nikola Tesla. The second an earlier Vulcan named Tyrok. They reported using electromagnetic fields to transport items to the future."

He paused to emphasize his next statement. "I understand that we are in an asteroid field, the majority of its components is duranium. Captain, duranium is highly magnetic."

"This is true, but it's all duranium ore... Low EM reactivity. Barely enough to keep us hidden with our sensor scrambling in place." Enalia said, wondering where this was going. "Also, didn't the Vulcan Science Commission deem time travel as impossible during Tyrek's time?"

"Indeed," the Vulcan agreed. "Tyrek's work was deemed illogical and he was banded from Vulcan for continuing his pursuits. The claims were his logic was not based on given facts. However, we now know time travel is legitimate."

Sinek knew that Tesla's work had issues as well. "As far as Tesla, he was able to transport small items. However, when he had drastic results when he tested it on a manned naval ship."

Both scientist's algorithms had errors. Hence the importance of testing. But they were making progress in the unknown.

"Combining their work, I believe I have arrived at the correct algorithm that will get us back to our time. If we could turn the Hera into a Tesla coil, generating static electric currents into the duranium, we could possible create an electromagnetic field. I would have to first ascertain if we have enough duranium to interact with the static.""

"You mean the Phillycheese experiment or something, right? There were a lot of pretty bad lasting effects, if I remember right..." Enalia shook her head a bit as she spoke. "I've turned shuttle warp coils into teselatic arrays before, but not to do anything of that scale. Just to shoot some arc lightning into another shuttle to ignite their plasma exhaust. You have some more recent data and numbers to back up this theory, I assume." Enalia was open to ideas like this, but she had to have some solid evidence that this sort of thing would work, first. Especially considering the questionable nature of the sources of the stories of these forms of tech.

"The Philadelphia Experiment, yes Captain," Sinek accurately identified. "Tesla had died before the experiment commenced. Had he lived, it may have been successful. If you wish me to pursue, I can run some tests. I may need an engineer to assist me."

"Small tests and simulations please, Commander. And don't risk the ship. Once you have some solid data, please let me know." Enalia said.

"Aye, Captain!" the CSO commented. "Do you have any suggestions for an engineer to assist? You know your crew better than I."

"An engineer versed in temporal physics? Not a clue. It's not something I usually look for in an engineering officer. Ven or Rhett might know someone but I don't." Enalia said apologetically.

"Barring no problems or interruptions, I will have a report to you tomorrow," the Vulcan announced. He knew Lieutenant Nosplet was a bit eccentric, but was good at what he does. Sinek had no dealings with Ensign Beaumont yet. Perhaps both could help. "If there is nothing further Captain, I will continue the project."

"Let me know when you have something then. Dismissed." Enalia said, looking back down at her mountain of PaDDs.

"Indeed," Sinek responded. He then turned on his heals and exited the ready room. Already, Sinek was thinking ahead, planning and calculating the experimenting ahead of him.
