Something to Consider

Posted on Sun May 17th, 2015 @ 6:49pm by Commander Sinek & Lieutenant Vi Mingenbach PhD

Mission: The New Sydney Fiasco
Location: CSO Office
Timeline: Before Shore Leave

Lieutenant Commander Sinek awaited Doctor Mingenbach in his office. He had sent a communication to her to report to his office at precisely 0900 hours. He did not give her any indication why he desired to see her.

Dr. Mingenbach reported to Sinek's office at exactly 0930 hours. She knew she was late but she had overslept and gotten lost on the new ship. She rang the chime, deeply afrais of what her department head might say about her tardiness.

Sinek assumed that the visitor was Dr. Mingenbach. Mentally, he noted she was thirty minutes late. "Enter," he spoke, infecting no tones of anger. His entire demeanor stayed steady and even throughout the conversation.

Vi entered silently at first and then blurted out: "I apologize for being late commander! I'm still getting used to the Hera! " She breathed heavily.

Sinek placed his hands before him, fingers forming the familiar triangle shape. "This is a first occurence; do not make it a common practice," he replied. "Please have a seat."

She sat down in the chair in front of his desk. She wondered what he was about to tell her. It was probably something to do with the cane. She waited quietly for him to speal.

Calmly, Sinek began, "As you know, the Captain is granting leave soon. During this time, there is something I wish for you to consider."

She raised an eyebrow, not realizing what the commander was talking about. "And what is that, sir?"

"As you know," Sinek continued, "I have been given the opportunity to serve as the Second Officer of the Hera. I have duties added to those of being the Chief Science Officer. If am am able to fulfill those duties, I will need an able person to serve as Assistant Chief Science Officer. During your leave, I would like for you to consider the position."

Doctor Mingenbach gasped. "Sir...while I appreciate the offer, I think it's a little too early for a position promotion. Wouldn't you agree?" She really couldn't believe her ears. She hadn't done a damn thing to deserve this. She had just gotten on the ship and now she was expected to be the assistance chief science officer? Unbelievable.

A stoic look remained on the Vulcan's face. "I understand you are new to the ship. That newness brings anxiousness to some beings. I have reviewed your file. You are qualified to be my assistant. I realize that others have been here longer. However, your qualifications outweigh their tenure. I am not expecting an answer from you today. I prefer you evaluate the opportunity during leave. Report your decision when you return."

Vi listened to the Vulcan speak. It was neutral and monotone, but that was what she expected. She had had many encounters with Vulcans in the fleet because most of them went into the fields of science. She sighed but smiled reassuringly. "Yes sir. I will consider the position...thanks for the offer."

Sinek thought that given enough time to think about it, Doctor Mingenbach would make the logical choice to be his assistant. She was bright, qualified and she her research was organized and detailed.

"Thank you Doctor," Sinek evenly responded. "That will be all."

"Yes sir," said Vi and she got up to leave out the chief science officer's office.
