Routine Check Up

Posted on Thu May 21st, 2015 @ 9:50am by Lieutenant Vi Mingenbach PhD & Lieutenant Commander Ethan Chaparral MD

Mission: The New Sydney Fiasco
Location: Sickbay

She had finally had some free time to get around and do some things. Vi wanted to go ahead and get the requirements for being aboard a new ship done and out of the way so she went to sickbay to go ahead and get her physical done. Being that she was a science officer and could work closely with medical, she didn't really mind it much like most officers did. Next she'd stop by the counselor's office. She walked in, looking around for a vacant doctor.

There seemed to be a rash of new arrivals to the Hera. Ethan had just completed yet another physical. He didn't mind, it was easy work and he enjoyed meeting new faces. He was rearranging some meds, doing some reorganization when he saw another patient. He'd seen her around, she wasn't that new. "How are you?" he asked.

Vi smiled. "I'm fine, thanks for asking. I'm here for my physical. "

"yeah, a lot people are doing that today. Let's go find a biobed and get you checked out," Ethan said.

Vi followed Ethan, brushing her pink curls behind her ear. She smiled at him when they reached a biobed. "I'm Vi Mingenbach by the way." She held out her hand for him to shake. "Nice to meet you."

"I'm Ethan," he said taking her hand and shaking it. "Looks like you're in the Science Department, judging from the uniform. Am I right?"

"You're correct," she said with a warm smile. "I specialize in astrophysics and scientific weaponry."

"Scientific weaponry?" the doctor asked, "excuse my ignorance, but aren't all weapons scientific?"

She stared at him blankly, and ignoring his question she said: "My physical, doctor?"

"Just trying to make conversation," he said keeping his tone professional, you are the one that told me your specialty. But you can just use the biobed there. It should do fine."

Vi sighed. "Alrighty..." She didn't say anything. She was trying to make a good impression on all the members of the ship but she was doing an awful job. She was embarrassing herself significantly.

"So any illnesses or injures since your last physical? Anything else I should be aware of?"

"Umm...well the last ship I was on, before I went on my sabbatical, was destroyed, and I suffered a concussion."

"And how did they treat that?"

"Oh you know," she said with a smile. "A magic wand and a bippidty boppity boo."

It took Ethan a few minutes to get the reference, "Well I'm no fairy godmother, but we'll try to repeat your treatment if you need us to."

"That's good," she said softly. She looked at him. "Say commander...what's it like on this ship?"

He smiled at her, "Well, it has been an interesting ride, let's say that much. You know about our passing through the space/time anomaly, the last three CMOs have died or been transformed. My ex, from back in the Academy who I thought I would never see again showed up at the same time I did. I've been kidnapped and tortured. My ex asked me to marry him. My mother showed up, not sure how much she likes my fiance and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Fortunately or unfortunately as the case maybe, I don't think the drama is confined to just myself.

This is not your typical ship, but I like it."

"Wow that sounds like my kind of ship," she replied.

"Well, welcome aboard and welcome to the craziness. Now let's get you checked out, so I can sign off on your file and certify you fit for duty."

"Sure thing," she said. She thought he had done all the medical stuff while they were having a conversation. Apparently this doctor couldn't multi-task.

Ethan ran the tricorder wand over the woman's body. All the fields were green and there was nothing out of the ordinary. "I think we're about done," he commented, "Any per-existing conditions I should know about?"

"No," she replied simply. "Are we done yet, doctor? You're the chief medical officer but this was by far the longest physical I've endured. If I didn't know you were gay already, I'd say you were checking me out."

Ethan laughed, "Yes we're done, and sorry if you were inconvenienced, but I'll sign off and approve you for duty. But no, I was not checking you out."

She hopped off the biobed and held out her hand for Ethan to shake, and she also laughed. "Good, thank you for the check up, doctor. I'll be seeing you around." And with that she left.
