Inside the andorian.

Mission: When Iconians Deserve to Die

The andorain chief engineer whistled to herself as she made her way from engineering. She didn't like having to get her regular medical checkup especially having to explain the anomalies within her. Still, she would rather just get it out of the way than put it off and one of her legs had been killing her since her last session down in the holodeck.

The doors opened as she stepped into sickbay looking for the new chief medical doctor.

A minute later, one of the nurses had flushed the doctor into the main room to greet the Andorian. "Hello," she said. "I'm Doctor Yale... what brings you here today?"

"Hello, Yale I'm Thex sh'Zoarhi. I'm here for my routine physical and I was hoping you can check my leg it's been killing me for a few days." Thex replied politely.

"Certainly," the doctor answered. She indicated the nearest biobed and waited for Thex to take a seat. She reached into her lab pocket to retrieve her medical tricorder. "You said the pain started a few days ago? Do you remember if you were doing anything which triggered it?"

"Dancing down on the holodeck. Specifically Orion style." Thex responded.

Possibly naive, Cassi said, "I'm not sure what that means - Orion style?"

"Orion style of dancing. Well, one of them." The andorian replied looking slightly embarrassed.

It was clear that there would be no more details provided. The doctor frowned at her tricorder and silently asked it to be more forthcoming with its answer. She pulled out the scanning device and started her first sweep, remembering how Nilari (an Andorian security officer at her last assignment) often left out key pieces of information during their conversations. "Is this something that has happened before; or is this new?"

"Not since I first learned dancing and that was several years ago. Just slipped and twisted my leg." Thex replied honestly.

"I'm not detecting that anything is broken. Typically, slips and twists hurt from the unusual strain you've put on the joint. The only thing I can prescribe for that is stretching and maybe some ice. It will work itself out soon enough," the doctor said.

"That's good to know doctor. If you have the time can i get my routine physical. I'd like to get it out of the way." Thex responded smiling slightly to herself.

"Yes, yes," Cassi looked apologetic. "I should have told you what I'm doing with the tricorder. I have a few readings to take and I'll pull up your medical records momentarily to check your vaccinations. But, since you indicated your leg is bothering you, I wanted to address that first. Are you currently taking any medications or supplements?"

"Not unless coffee counts." Came the Andorian's response before she pushed thinking it was better to get something out of the way. "Just to let you know doctor, I have some very odd looking DNA. It due to some genetic engineering one of my ancestors had."

"How do you mean?" Cassi stopped her scan in order to give her patient her undivided attention.

"My great great shen had some genetic engineering done to her without her knowledge. I still don't really know how, but to stop the usual slowing and halting of my ovaries producing eggs some andorian scientists created what they called a patch. All i know is that it's not andorian and it somehow works. I can have children far later than most shen's." Thex did her best to explain something she knew she was nowhere near qualified to explain.

"Are you zhen or shen?" the doctor asked. Cassi was uncomfortably familiar with the unusual requirements of Andorian pregnancies and the complications of genetic engineering. Please say zhen... she silently prayed.

"Shen." Thex replied having been through all this before and recognizing the doctor's confusion. "I know my species fell out of the evolutionary tree when we thought this reproductive system would work. How we survived to reach space is beyond me."

Cassi let out her breath; she hadn't realized she was holding it. "I'm certain genetic engineering helps at this point. It must be challenging to form the family units needed to reproduce in this day and age." The doctor returned to her scans. "Besides you leg, do you have any other concerns?"

"To bad the rest of my planet doesn't think so." Thex responded quietly before finishing her answer. "No, no other concerns doctor. Know it's not been long, but how are you finding the Hera?" The andorian asked politely.

The doctor pursed her lips together, giving the question some thought. "Well, I've met very few people so far, but everyone I've met seems well-mannered," she said. "Though I'm a little concerned about the track record of my predecessors in this position. I really hated statistics in school, and I don't want to become one."

"Sorry to hear that. I know my own staff can not recored were the tools have gone." Thex replied.

The tricorder chirped and Cassi consulted it. "Your vitals are all in acceptable ranges, so you can check off your annual health assessment for another year. You're free to go if you don't have anything more that needs to be addressed."

"Good to know." Thex said as she slid of the biobed. " Any of the machines you'd like me to take a look at?" She politely asked.

"It hasn't been brought to my attention that anything is out of order yet. I'd like to imagine that the head nurse would bring that to my immediate attention; so I'm going to say all is good in here," Cassi answered.

" Okay see you later doc." Thex responded as she turned and left the medbay.
