Nurse to Queen Two

Posted on Thu Mar 1st, 2018 @ 11:32pm by Lieutenant Marci Ulfred & Captain Enalia Telvan

Mission: When Iconians Deserve to Die
Location: Main Sickbay
Timeline: Alongside "What to do with a 2.2AU Ball of Doom"

The moment Marci and Enalia materialized in trauma suite 2, there was a flurry of activity. A pair of orderlies physically lifted Enalia onto the biobed and starting prepping her for the procedure while Marci scrubbed in. They quickly set up the biobed's monitoring systems and opened Enalia's uniform jacket to raise her undershirt and expose the symbiont pouch. As they worked one of the nurses rolled a mobile rapid infuser over to the bedside and started hooking it up. Noticing this, Marci nodded slightly as she scrubbed. "Set it for the highest concentration of isoboramine it will allow, at the fastest infusion rate. It'll buy us some time."

"Yes, ma'am." Working quickly, the nurse programmed the infuser and placed the hypospray attachment against Enalia's arm before setting the machine to infuse. "I hope you have some ideas."

"I might. Won't promise they're legal though." Sufficiently clean, Marci returned to the bedside and switched on the sterile field. "I'm sorry, Captain, but you'll need to be awake so we know if what we're doing is working."

Enalia was barely aware of what was going on but she was awake enough to reply. The infuser did help at least so she fluttered her eyes open a moment. "I'm awake. I can handle... Handle this... Just let me know... What you need..."

"Just... stay awake for now." Knowing it would be difficult, Marci quickly added, "Tell me about how you were chosen for Telvan." As she spoke, she gently eased Enalia's symbiont pouch open, exposing Telvan for examination. The symbiont didn't seem as active as it should be, so she held her hand out for someone to hand her something. "I need an isoboramine syringe. Not a hypospray, a sixty milliliter catheter tip."

The orderlies exchanged 'wtf' glances as the other nurse retrieved the item and handed it to Marci. "Are you sure about this?"

"Nope." In fact, Marci had no idea if anything would work. But she confidently depressed the plunger on the syringe and squirted Telvan with the isoboramine mixture.

"Found out I was... Compatible... But due to family... Rejected... Mother didn't take kindly to that..." Enalia grinned at the memory of her mother ranting about the decision over subspace comms. They weren't entirely close, but apparently she had felt slighted. Enalia herself hadn't tried that hard and didn't have that much interest in it, but her mother did. After all, to her it was a high mark of honor. The results of her mother's overreaction however, did pique Enalia's interest... Greatly... "She bribed them... Paid for three years of... Literally everything they needed... So I was reassessed... And chosen for the youngest ever symbiont to be joined..."

"Is that why you're so weird?" Marci chuckled a bit at the story, gently prodding the symbiont and looking for a response. "I mean, the symbionts take a really long time to mature. Even I know that... and if yours is practically a baby, that would explain a lot of weirdness." Telvan seemed to quiver slightly but did not strenuously object to being touched, like most symbionts did. At least, that's what they'd said at the academy.

"Yeah... First host... Baby symbiont... Spoiled rich pirate heiress for a host..." Enalia grinned at the thought. "Yeah... Recipe for weirdness... Never mind my three castles... And millions of teacups... I have a spa filled with chocolate spring water... You should try it some time..."

"That sounds pretty awesome. I've never heard of chocolate spring water." The isoboramine flush wasn't having the desired effect, and Marci frowned slightly. Either it wasn't what Telvan needed or the concentration was too low. Or perhaps it couldn't be absorbed in saline, like she'd had it mixed. She wasn't sure how to proceed, and her gentle physical manipulations of the symbiont weren't telling her much. She did notice a small amount of a gel-like substance in the pouch, but she wasn't sure if it was the normal amount or not. She wasn't an expert on Trill!

"I went to one on Earth... Japan... and it was amazing... So naturally I had to have one... No actual chocolate, but just scented... So divine..." Enalia drifted off a bit before refocusing. "I could really go for some tea right now..."

"I will personally make you some tea once you're stable. That's a promise." Withdrawing her hand from Enalia's symbiont pouch, Marci gave the mysterious gel a studious look. As she studied it, her head tilted to the right, like an inquisitive dog. "Hey, Roberts!"

The assisting nurse turned just enough to look at Marci, raising an eyebrow at her. "...yes?"

"Scan this stuff. Tell me if we can replicate it. I have an idea." Marci dropped some of the gel into a specimen container, nudging it aside so Nurse Roberts could scan it. As far as she could tell, it was something that either Enalia's body could produce, but not enough was being made. And the way the symbiont sat in it, she was willing to bet it was being absorbed somehow.

"Should be easy enough," Nurse Roberts confirmed after a quick scan. "How much?"

"As much as we can, and infuse it with isoboramine. As much as possible." Maybe it would work and maybe it wouldn't, but Marci wasn't willing to give up.

"It sounds like you've come up with something, Doc..." Enalia grinned again. "That's good... Let me know when my tea is ready..."

"Marci. I'm not a doctor." While she appreciated the compliment, Marci didn't want people getting the wrong idea. Someone set a large container of the requested gel next to her, and she grinned a bit wolfish-ly. "All right this will probably feel cold, but we don't have any time to waste." There wasn't really a non-messy way to do it, but Marci did her best to contain the mess. She kept Enalia's symbiont pouch open with one hand and used the other to dip a scoop into the bucket of gel and pour it over Telvan. I hope this works, otherwise everyone will think I'm just crazy...

As soon as the goop started soaking in, Enalia and Telvan shivered then relaxed visibly relieved. "I feel... I think I feel more... Whole..."

"More whole is good." Hoping that meant this crazy idea would work, Marci poured a little more of her isoboramine gel into Enalia's pouch. "Starfleet Medical would never approve of this..."

"I approve..." Enalia grinned a bit more as color started to return to her face. "Remind me to promote you later."

"Just doing my job, ma'am." Marci paused to check the readout from the biobed, breaking out into another wolfish grin. It was working. Enalia and Telvan were stabilizing nicely. She didn't know if it would be permanent, but she'd at least bought them plenty of time.

Enalia nodded and peeked her eyes open again. "I'm starting to feel better. Not good yet, but better. Thank you."

Marci breathed a sigh of relief, letting Enalia's symbiont pouch close and sealing the goo inside. "You're welcome. We'll keep an eye on you for a bit, and if you remain stable... I'll get you some tea." Marci was going to need something stronger than tea, however. Tequila. Bourbon. Maybe some vodka.
