Personality & Traits

Personal History The darkness was where Kieran was born, and it would be what he would grow into. Most kids have a primal fear of the dark, fear of what stalks them from the shadows. However, this was never Kieran. He was never afraid of what lurked in the darkness, but rather what was there when illuminated by light. Espionage and infiltration were a part of his life from birth as he was born in 2358 on the beautiful, warm and sunny blue skied planet of Risa, a peaceful and pleasant little paradise for many, welcoming to all, and a key vacation spot for many Starfleet officers on leave. However, a few years prior, darkness came to Risa, darkness in the form of a Romulan major, a field operative of the Tal Shiar who was slightly surgically altered and posing as a Vulcan scientist. The major had been sent to Risa on a two year covert intelligence gathering operation. The Romulan Star Empire, realizing the importance of Risa to the Federation and specifically to Starfleet, placed an operative there in hopes of learning more about the Federation actions, and Starfleet's strength and ship movements. Knowing which starships were in orbit or around Risa at any given time was beneficial to the movements of Romulan vessels along the neutral zone.

Kieran's mother was an unfortunately pleasant and unsuspecting Risan woman named Anise Gideon who worked in one of the Risan resorts as a hostess and barmaid, a woman who was looking for love, or at the very least some comfort after getting out of a rocky relationship with a Bolian don juan. However, she became quite taken by a man who she fell hard for despite his stoicism and cling to science and logic albeit and unbeknownst to Anise, quite fake. She had fallen for a Vulcan scientist who was not a scientist nor a a Vulcan at all, but rather an operative of the Romulan Tal Shiar. The major had no qualms about taking advantage of Anise and her foolishness. He did just that, took advantage and used her as a means to collect information from intoxicated officers of Starfleet, and used her as good additional cover for his assumed identify of Dr. T'Mar, a Vulcan Xeno-Sociologist who specialized in the study of emotions, a Vulcan who was very much a real individual, or rather was before the Tal Shiar had him killed in order to use his identity.

The relationship between Anise and “Dr. T'Mar” was one based on deception and lies, the only genuine feelings in the relationship were Anise, but she falsely assumed that T'Mar's distant and detached nature from being a Vulcan who supressed his emotions was why he was not as warm and affectionate as she was. However, they did engage in intimate relations, and the major used these opportunities to pump her for more information, wrapping her so easily around his finger like a spider wrapping prey in a silky web. The couple never wed, however, Anise did become pregnant in 2357. This was not something the major had planned, and it was not approved by his superiors in the Tal Shiar nor the empire. However, they permitted him to allow the birth of the child. It would, however, mark the last few months of the majors assignment on Risa. Citing that he had to return to Vulcan, shortly before the child was due, in order to tend to matters on Vulcan, Anise was left waiting for Dr. T'Mar to return. However, the Romulan operative never did return and Anise later had her baby after learning the man who fathered her child was not Dr. T'Mar. She had contacted Vulcan, where authorities were intrigued by her inquiry as an ongoing investigation was being conducted as to who had killed Dr. T'Mar over a year ago.

In March of 2358, Anise gave birth to a son. It was evident that he was half-Vulcanoid by the shape of his ears. However, further medical scans of the new born gave Anise the answers that she was looking for. Her son was not half-Vulcan, he was half-Romulan. Though she loved her son, and could never place blame on him for what his father had done, it was a dark day on Risa despite the blue skies. It was also a dark time for Anise, and she named her son Kieran. She had spent another couple of years working as a hostess and barmaid on Risa, but the sunshine and blue skies were no longer appealing to the depressed woman. She was not very well educated, and was in need of a change of scenery, and some place where she could make enough to support her child. This move took Anise and Kieran Kyros Gideon from Risa to the dreary and rainy world of Ferenginar where Anise found employment in what would be considered a Ferengi night club. However, it also of course had lots of gambling, and though the pay was unfair for most, it was more than Anise made on Risa albeit she was now working as a dabo girl and dancer.

What Anise had failed to consider was how her son would be treated on Ferenginar, and more specifically, by her employer. Though the Ferengi owner, Brek was not fond of the pathetic child at first, he eventually grew to somewhat like and admire the boy as he became somewhat of a surrogate father figure for Kieran. Ferenginar was not a Federation world, and it did not have any child labor laws to protect children who were citizens of the Ferengi Alliance. Kieran's education was sometimes frowned upon by Brek, who did not support Anise hiring (paying when she could) a private teacher for Kieran. However, she was able to convince Brek to increase her pay because she would have Kieran taught about business and making profit, which she did somewhat, but mostly just to appease Brek and keep the money coming in. She had the teacher cover all the essentials as well, and though it may have not been the best education, it was at least an education.
Kieran would be given an education during the day. However, nights were time for work, and Kieran was not exempt from that. Brek was more than a father figure, he was also a boss. As soon as he felt the boy was ready to really learn, which was when Kieran turned about 8, Brek put the boy to work as a server. It was simple work that an idiot could do, and Kieran was the replacement of one of Brek's idiot brothers-in-law. Kieran waited tables, bused them, and often would serve plates of food or walked around with trays of beverages, catering to various species and mostly people of questionable character. Kieran was at least a paid employee albeit bare minimum on a good night, less if he broke any glasses or messed up any orders. Brek was hard on the boy, but he treated Kieran like he would have any Ferengi, maybe slightly better.

The two did bond quite well overtime as Kieran matured and learned the ropes of the business a bit better. Though learning the robes also meant learning how to lie, cheat, and steal as that was the way of a good Ferengi businessman. 'Profit, profit, profit, Kieran' was what Brek always said to the half-Romulan. It was Kerian's ever watchful eyes and well toned ears that really impressed Brek as Kieran helped Brek catch several individuals who had rigged games in their favor, as well as helped Brek catch employees who were stealing from him, and a bar tender who was costing almost a bar of latinum a night with his over-pouring of drinks. By the time Kieran turned twelve, he was promoted in the business. No longer serving food and beverage nor cleaning tables. Brek had given Kieran a raise and moved him over to the club's security and surveillance where Kieran worked closely with two Nausicaans, a few Ferengi, and a Lethean. The security and surveillance team were able to increase profits and maintain the security of the well to do establishment. However, the Nausicaans cared only for fighting with unruly patrons, the Ferengi were rather unintelligent, and the Lethan gave Brek the creeps.

Eventually, one of the Ferengi who was head of security and surveillance quit, and went to work for a competitor. Despite only being a child, a young teenager at the time, Brek felt that Kieran had more than proven himself and gave the boy the position as head of security and surveillance. Kieran was quite useful and really took a liking to the leadership role as well as interest in security and surveillance. This would be a pivotal moment in the boy's life. As time went on, Kieran tought Brek some things as well. He taught Brek ways to design cheating mechanism that Brek later put into use in order to clear a larger profit each night. However, when Kieran reached the age of fifteen, he started to really think about his future and what he could do with it. This was when he started to look at Starfleet as a possibility. However, there was a snag. Ferenginar was not a Federation world, and it was harder for non-Federation citizens to get accepted. Kieran, however, had been a Federation citizen when he was born on Risa to Anise. They still had family on Risa, and that was how Kieran planned to better himself.

After talking things over with his mother, Kieran took all the latinum he had and arranged himself a transport on a cargo ship from Ferenginar to Risa. Brek was not pleased at all that his head of security and surveillance was leaving, and he was bitter about it at first. However, he did eventually calm down and allowed Kieran to leave the club and return to Risa to live with his grandparents. Though Kieran's stay with his grandparents was not very long. He had permanent residency on Risa and recognition as a Federation citizen. After celebrating his seventeenth birthday with his grandparents, Kieran filled out and submitted his application to Starfleet Academy. It had taken some time, but he was contacted and scheduled to take the entrance examinations in following months. Kieran took advantage of the months before taking his examinations to study anything and everything that he could think of that would be beneficial or useful to him. He wanted to have an idea of what Starfleet would be like. So, he traveled to Earth and met with friends of his grandparents, former and active officers in Starfleet. Kieran wanted to also know what field of study, what path he should take if accepted into the academy. For him, it seemed natural to be drawn to Security and Tactical. Though the surveillance end of his previous job had made him interested in the idea of blending in, of spying on people unknowingly and collecting information and data. This was Intelligence work.

Kieran took his entrance examinations while on Earth. They were extremely difficult, trying, and lasted several days for hours at a time. Some were 'written' while others were oral. There were even times when he had to do things very hands on like finding a problem in circuitry in order to avoid a complete power failure. He was not great with the technical things, science was definitely a weakness. However, he did quite well on simulations that dealt with piloting maneuvers, and he excelled at the security drills and was quickly able to identify threats to his simulated starship while at the tactical training station. It was quite the experience for Kieran, but he was concerned that his scores were not good enough all around to get him accepted into Starfleet Academy. He returned to Risa where he would wait to be contacted about the results of his examinations. His assessment of his performance was pretty spot on accurate. His scores in areas of science and operations were much to be improved upon, and were the weight that brought his otherwise high scores and good performances down. His examination scores showed that he was a strong tactician and was skillful as a pilot, fast on his feet and exceptionally well at recognizing and identifying various starships, and finding vulnerabilities in their design.

He had received notice that his scores were not exceptional, and that his scores together were not enough to merit acceptance into Starfleet Academy. However, with the Federation having just gone through two rather brutal wars, tactical officers were in higher demand, and it was Kieran's performance in these areas that impressed enough of the review committee to accept him into Starfleet Academy. The young man could hardly believe it, but he had made it albeit not as well as he had wanted. After receiving his acceptance notice, Kieran was on his way back to Earth to settle in San Francisco as he sorted out some matters that were hindering his enrollment process. One of those being his heritage, specifically, being Romulan. Though the Federation and Starfleet did not discriminate per se, they were very strict on certain species being permitted to attend the Academy. One incident was pertained to a young man, Simon Tarses who enlisted in Starfleet with his records identifying him as a ¾ Human, ¼ Vulcan. However, while a Crewmen, it was discovered that he was not ¼ Vulcan, but rather Romulan. Though it was mostly for the fact that the young man had lied about his heritage that caused the most trouble, Starfleet was still cautious. Kieran did not lie about his heritage and eventually the matters were settled and he was admitted into Starfleet Academy.

Before beginning his Freshmen year, Kieran was to select a program/department to major in, and the potential of selecting a minor or minors. He knew what he wanted study more or less, but he did meet with an advisor to discuss his possibilities and potential in Starfleet. In the end, he decided to pursue what he was leaning towards. Kieran would declare himself an Intelligence major, and added Security/Tactical as his minor. Kieran found Starfleet Academy to be an interesting experience during his first year. He faced a mixed reaction from his fellow cadets. Some of them easily accepted Kieran, while others held onto prejudices and suspicion of him because of his Romulan heritage. It was something that he hated, but could understand. Though the Romulan Star Empire had recently sided with the Federation towards the end of the Dominion War, the Empire and Federation had a turbulent history. Regardless of how people felt, it was difficult for Kieran to make friends during his first year. However, this did not bother him too much, at least he did not allow it to. Cadet Kieran Kyros Gideon focused primarily on his academic studies to compensate for his lack of a social life. It had resulted in a solid first year, with an exceptional second semester.

He made the Commandant's list with his grades, and was catching the eyes and attention of some of the Academy's more senior and well respected faculty. This was certainly not a negative thing as he went into his second year, taking classes on various species, their militant pasts, and how tactical diplomatic approaches should be used in dealing with them. As an Intelligence student, Cadet Gideon was to pick two to three hostile species to study in depth for his various classes. Kieran decided to focus his species analysis on three species that he found interesting: Romulans, Tholians, and the Gorn. All were very different species, but they all had something in common. All had issues with the Federation and their first encounters did not go well. He became quite familiar with these peoples, their worlds, their territory, governments and most importantly their starships' offensive and defensive capabilities. His second year did bring about a couple of friendships, some of which he still holds presently. However, this was also the year, towards the end of his fourth semester that he was approached by Captain Matilda Carrow, a former Starfleet Commanding Officer who left bridge duty in order to teach a new generation of future Captain's, or so she had hoped. Her Starfleet career was lengthy, and she was well decorated. She was also taking over one of the Academy's most tough as nails squads, Copper Squadron. Though, Copper Squadron was more commonly known informally by the nickname Copperheads.

They were known as Copperheads after the North American serpent creature, a species of snake on Earth. Cadets selected for Copper Squadron did not look any different than any other cadet while at the Academy on campus. However, they were rather frequently taken on special training exercises off campus, and sometimes off Earth. They were known to take some lengthy additional courses over Summer and Winter breaks at the Academy with their instructors. When away on these advanced training exercises, cadet traded in their standard uniforms for black uniforms, sometimes flight suites with dark helmets with a bronze accent. Copperheads were primarily Security/Tactical majors, though cadets from other areas of study were invited/recruited to Copper Squadron. Intelligence and Flight Control usually rounded out the rest. However, an occasional Science, Operations, Engineer, or the rare Medical cadet was added. The Copperheads were trained in endurance, weapons, tactics, intelligence gathering, survival and an abundance of skills that were deemed necessary. One of the most interesting aspects of the Copperheads were that some of their training exercises took them to training side by side with Starfleet Marine Cadets in all terrains be it forest, mountainous, jungle, or desert.

Accepting the offer that Captain Carrow placed before him, Kieran was assigned to Copper Squadron as a Junior Year Cadet. He spent the first half of this year in San Francisco as he normally would. Though he did observe that he classes were more physical and intense. He also had some extra side work to do, papers were longer and he felt as though he was being graded harsher than his fellow cadets. However, he knuckled through it, kept his head down and remained determined. By the second half as a Junior Year Cadet, Kieran found himself pulled from the classroom for and placed aboard a starship under Carrow's command. The USS Basilisk, a Saber-class. They were taking the Basilisk out on a simple mission to Alpha 441, an abandoned rogue planetoid that had once been used by the Maquis as a munitions base. It was desolate and difficult to get to because it was located within the Badlands. However, the journey was not without incident. The Basilisk found herself under attack from Breen warships and the Basilisk, crewed only by a few Academy instructors and a two dozen cadets from various years ranging from Freshmen to Seniors, was crippled and blasted to pieces. Captain Carrow survived the dogfight with the Breen, but the starship was forced to enter the atmosphere of Alpha 411 as the attack continued until the Basilisk came crashing into one of the desserts on the planet. Kieran did not recall much of the battle. Consoles had exploded, the shields were down and there were casualties. The only medical personnel aboard was a Lieutenant who was a Nurse at the Academy, and a medical cadet who was Pre-med. Kieran had blacked out and awoken after the starship crash landed. The Nurse was dead as were several other, cadets and instructors alike. The Lieutenant Commander who had been serving as Carrow's First Officer and the ship's Engineer was among the dead. Carrow herself was severely injured, but alive. Of the twelve cadets who were part of the crew, only eight of them remained. Captain Carrow knew that she was not fit to keep command, but with the two other officers dead, she made a Senior Year Cadet, Indira Bali as acting First Officer as she was the most senior of the cadets. Carrow had left Indira (an Engineering major) to select a Second Officer. Indira selected Kieran, and he accepted the position of Acting Second Officer.

They had managed to get a distress signal sent out, and had managed to treat the Captain's injures. However, the distress signal was not only a beacon for hope of rescue, but also a lure for Breen to come finish them off, and the Breen were closer. It would be a three weeks of hell. Arming themselves with what weapons they could salvage from the wrecked Basilisk, the eight cadets defended their Captain. However, they were out numbered and forced to fight like Maquis. By week three the eight cadets had lost three more, lowering their number to five, and Cadet Bali had not made it. Kieran had found himself in as Captain Carrow's right hand. On the 21st day of hell, rescue came in the form of a troop of Starfleet Marines. However, after Kieran and the others set foot aboard the Marine transport vessel, everything began to vanish. It was replaced by a large room with a grid. 21 days of hell, and it was all fake. The entrance of the holodeck opened and all the instructors and cadets who Kieran had watched 'die' were all congratulating him and the four others who survived all 21 days. It was all for an advanced survival course that left Kieran a bit shaken, but certainly better prepared for surviving against hostile forces.

Senior Year was much of the same, just harder courses and the suspicion that not everything may have been what it seemed. However, all the other cadet training missions were legit. Kieran was part of two training missions off Earth, and they both went rather well. He was solid student throughout his four years at the academy, and graduated as such. Graduating a member of the Copperheads and with honors on the Commandant's list had practically all but guaranteed a damn good assignment for the newly commissioned ensign Kieran Gideon. This resulted in his being requested by the Commanding Officer of the recently commissioned USS Talaria, a Galaxy-class starship. He was very pleased with this assignment, and even further so when he was informed that his position aboard would not only be an Intelligence Officer, but Assistant Chief Intelligence Officer. In August of 2380, he boarded the USS Talaria and manned his station.

Ensign Gideon worked closely under the supervision of his Department Head, Lieutenant Jors, a Bolian male who had a long and distinguished career in Intelligence. Kieran found Jors to be too much of a social being, a jabberjaw who ran his mouth on and on and on. However, Kieran could respect the man for being a great Intelligence officer. As annoying as Jors could be, he was also very alert when working and although easily distracted, he somehow was still alert to his station. He was a multi-tasking phenom. Bolians Kieran thought quite often rolling his eyes as he simply nodded in agreement to whatever Jors was saying. Serving the next three years under Lieutenant (and eventually Lieutenant Commander) Jors, Kieran felt as though he had learned a great deal.

Change was in the air when 2386 came around as an opening in the Security/Tactical department had opened for Chief Tactical Officer/Security Chief, and the young ensign who had recently been named as Assistant Chief for the department was not likely to step up and be promoted to the position. However, Kieran with his three years in the Intelligence department had felt that he could potentially get the spot if he requested a transfer to the Security/Tactical department. His wager paid off and he was promoted to Lieutenant JG and named the new Chief Tactical Officer/Security Chief for the USS Talaria. It was an interesting experience for Kieran to be part of the Captain's Senior Staff, a Department Head who did not simply attend meetings as an invited guest, but pulled up a table at Conference/Staff meetings with the whole cavalry, as a more or less equal to Jors, and the Captain asked Kieran of his own opinions on matters. It was thrilling and rewarding.

Lieutenant JG Kieran Kyros Gideon served as Chief Tactical Officer/Security Chief aboard the USS Talaria from 2386-2388 with distinction and praise as the lieutenant performed admirably in the position. Eight years aboard one starship, climbing up position and rank had gained Kieran respect, friendships, and admiration. However, after hitting the eight year mark aboard the Talaria, Kieran began to put some thought in transferring. He knew that doing so may mean having to settling on a smaller starship, but he also knew that remaining aboard the Talaria any longer may red flag his service record as not being an opportunist. People moved about starfleet, moving posting to posting and earning promotions. Only Captains were to hold onto starships so long. The man had goals and aspirations, none of which were going to be met by remaining aboard the Talaria another day. He made a department change back to Intelligence and took a position with Starfleet Intelligence as a Field Operative being assigned to the Syndicate Task Force. He was eventually put into an undercover operation on Orion, but became involved in investigating the murder of 47 Orion families after the undercover operation came to an abrupt end. Afterwards, he took the position of Chief Intelligence Officer aboard the USS Hera.
