Francis Drake Citation Awarded for outstanding ship-to-ship maneuvers and combat skills against the odds. Named after Sir. Francis Drake, English explorer, navigator, turned pirate. This award is in recognition for the 1855 defeat of the Spanish Armada. Drake was vice admiral in command of the English fleet (under Lord Howard of Effingham) when it overcame the Spanish Armada that was attempting to invade England in 1588.
