An Engineering Dilemma

Posted on Fri Feb 3rd, 2017 @ 1:21pm by Lieutenant Commander Eneas Clio & Lieutenant Commander Thex sh'Zoarhi

Mission: Refit Rondo
Location: Main Engineering

All ships that carried an Intelligence department eventually ran into the same problem. When those Intelligence systems failed, who fixed them? They were classified, so generally the Engineering department wasn't allowed to work on them without special clearance. And yet, most Intelligence officers didn't have the technical training required to repair the equipment. Every Chief Engineer that Clio had worked with handled the situation differently. It was never a conversation she looked forward to having.

But with so much equipment that could potentially fail when they needed it, Clio needed a solution. So she went down to Main Engineering to look for Thex, who she hoped was more level-headed than some engineers she'd worked with in the past.

Thex was currently running a diagnostic of the warp core when she noticed the second officer enter. Handing the scan to one of the attendees she walked over giving her a warm smile. " Lieutenant Commander what can the grease monkeys do for you?" She asked politely.

"I have a bit of a problem that needs your input, but it's kind of complex." Honestly, Clio thought 'complex' was a bit of an understatement. "The Hera carries a lot of classified Intelligence equipment, and someone has to maintain it. The problem is, Starfleet Intelligence requires that all persons entering the classified area have to have specific clearances, and they're not clearances I'm allowed to just hand out."

" I have bronze level clearance from some intel assignments I was part off a year ago if that helps. " Thex replied leading the commander over to a quiet corner.

"That helps some, but what I really need is for someone in my department to be trained for the most common types of engineering problems." To be fair, hearing that Thex had some Intelligence background helped put Clio's mind at ease. At least this particular engineer might understand the delicate nature of her work. "Starfleet Intelligence has seen fit to teach us how to use such tools, but not necessarily how to diagnose and fix problems."

" Well i need to get the ships systems up and running so i don't have time to train someone up at the moment. In a week i should be able to start. What exactly is the problem i could maybe take you through the basic checklist." Thex replied calmly trying to be as helpful as possible.

"There's no rush. Everything is functioning fine at the moment, except for the occasional power system incompatibility. I know some very basic engineering, so if you could show me how to resolve that we'll be in good shape for a while." Clio kind of liked Thex, especially how the Andorian woman stood her ground and didn't drop everything for minor issues.

" Most likely it because of the buggy code that's been installed with the new upgrades. The ships been plagued with them. If you can keep a record of when it strikes I can see if it's related to the other hiccups the girls having. I'll set up some time in a week or two and I'll run through the basics with you and any of your staff that would like to learn. " Thex said pulling out a padd and bringing up her schedule.

"I thought it might have something to do with that. I'll keep track for a couple weeks and see if I can track it down more specifically. Thank you, and please... don't rearrange anything on your schedule. We can manage until you have time." Clio smiled a little, well familiar with the time crunch of trying to do one's scheduled work and squeeze requests in around that.

" Okay then. If anything else happens let me know. I should have the buggy code gone by the end of the week. " Thex replied putting the padd back in her pocket.

"Sounds good to me. I'll let you get back to work, but please... call me if you need anything." Happy that Thex was willing to work with her, Clio smiled a bit and then headed back toward the door.

" Will do. Maybe see you later for a drink?" Thex replied.

"Maybe, if you have time! Good luck with everything down here." It seemed that Clio had made a new friend during her visit to Main Engineering, and she left in good spirits. The Hera was most definitely not like other assignments she had taken.

" You to." Thex called after her as she returned back to work.
