A Nudge in the Right Direction

Posted on Sat Jul 1st, 2017 @ 7:37pm by Chief Warrant Officer Daytona Ral

Mission: Death is in the Details
Location: On the way to Deshok's quarters in Clio's part of the spaceport
Timeline: 2160, While Daytona 2394 is killing Deshok

Daytona exited the tram he'd caught to follow Deshok and looked around. Seeing the landmark he was looking for, he headed of in pursuit of Deshok. He'd killed a lot of Deshok's thugs over the past year. He was pretty sure that the two dead ones back at the street cafe were the last two. The bastard was alone now. There was no one to protect him. All Daytona had to do was find him.

"Excuse me," said a voice off to Daytona's right. Someone touched his arm and Daytona stopped to see who was bothering him. A man in a hooded coat with some kind of mask covering his lower face had stopped him. "I think I can help you."

Daytona frowned. Whoever this was, his mask gave his voice a metallic, artificial sound.

"Why would you think that?" he said. "Why would you even want to help me?"

The man chuckled.

"Let's just say I'm invested in you seeing done what you've come here to see done," the man said. "You want to see him dead, don't you?"

Daytona's eyes narrowed.

"Entirely too many people seem to know that I'm here and why," he said. "What in the name of the Prime Number is going on here?"

"You don't have much time," the man said, the sense of urgency clear in his voice. "I'll show you where he is, but only if you promise to leave immediately afterwards."

Daytona decided to play along. Anything to get at Deshok. He'd waited long enough.

"Fine," he said. "I may not be able to get passage out of here before tomorrow. Is that soon enough for you?"

The man grabbed Daytona's arms and shook him.

"NO!" the man said in his metallic voice. "Here."

The man shoved a flimsy into Daytona's hand.

"What's this?" Daytona said. "Does this tell me where Deshok is?"

"No, you idiot!" the man said. "I didn't think I was ever this dumb, but I guess I was. Never mind. Look, he's in room 2754. Go there, right now, do what you have to do, and then IMMEDIATELY go to slip 78 in this section. That flimsy is your ticket out of here. They've been paid to take you away from here the minute you're aboard. Listen to me! More than your life depends on this! I can't tell you anymore...about this...but...in about two hundred and thirty four years, you're going to meet someone very special. Try not to screw it up. Now go! You need to be off this planet in less than twenty minutes! If you're still here after that, we're both dead, along with a lot of other people you've yet to meet. Go, you dolt! Move!"

Daytona looked at the man a moment, hesitated, then ran over to the nearest map. Looking quickly, he found the rooms he was looking for. He set off for them at a dead run.

=^=Really, sir?=^= a voice in the man's ear said as he watched Daytona running towards his destiny...both of their destinies. =^=The way I understand it, that relationship worked out pretty well for you and her. Are you trying to jinx yourself?=^=

The man chuckled to himself.

"It worked out really well," he said. "I'm just buying a little insurance. A lot can happen in two hundred and thirty-four years."

=^=I guess,=^= the voice responded. =^=Are you going to stay and make sure he gets off of the planet? I mean, if he hesitates at all...=^=

"He won't," the man said. "Because I didn't. If that makes any sense."

=^=Yes, sir,=^= the voice said. =^=I suppose it does. Sir, if there’s no reason for us to stay, maybe we should get the Hell out of here. I’d rather not even be in this time period when those tri-cobalt devices go off, let alone near this system. =^=

The man in the hood turned and walked towards a secluded alley, where no one would notice what’s about to happen. When he got to the alley, he ducked into it. When he got deep enough into the alley, he was ready.

“Alright, Lieutenant,” the man said. “One to beam up. Tell your captain that my business is done here. It’s time to move on to our next appointment.”

=^=Yes, sir,=^= the lieutenant responded.

A moment later, the man in the hood disappeared in the sparkle of a transporter beam. His work done here and now, he was of to somewhere, and some when, else.
