Something about phasers...

Posted on Fri May 29th, 2015 @ 9:36pm by Commander Angelica Fairchild & Lieutenant JG Vitor Tito

Mission: The New Sydney Fiasco
Location: Phaser range.
Timeline: After "Prisioner Transfer".

Vitor took his place on the phaser range. Following Hadren’s instructions he set up the dismantled phasers across the bench.
He set up the targeting program as he waited for the XO to arrive. He glanced again at the phasers pieces on the bench, eager to assemble them and fire. It has been too long since he done it last.

He shrugged and since he was waiting he thought it best to give a shoots in the targeting range. With the type two he carried on the transfer in his hand, he set up the random target program and started shooting.

When he finished he got 94 per cent on target, 76 of them dead center. The years learning archery from his wife payed off.

"Not bad," Angel comment from the doorway. "Your aim wanders a bit, but that's nothing a little practice can't fix. Seen a few security chiefs with much lower scores though, so I'd say you're doing pretty damn good." It took a lot of mental fortitude and awareness for her to remember that Vitor was only following orders, but it was fairly apparent - even with her relatively pleasant attitude - that she wasn't looking forward to the certification. Not because it was difficult though... more that she didn't want to explain that no, she wasn't cheating. Or no, she hadn't started practicing the moment that she'd heard that the new chief was running the entire staff through it. She'd just taken the thing so many damned times she practically had it committed to memory.

Vitor arched an eyebrow as he turned and smiled at the Commander. “Thank you, it’s just like fishing, you never forget it.”

"Fishing? Isn't the phrase about riding a bicycle?" Angel knew that not all cultures shared the same idioms, but that was one she hadn't heard before.

“Actually that depends on what part of Earth your ancestry is from. In my place it was easier to fish than ride a bike.” He holstered his phaser and walked next to the Commander helding up his hand. “Vitor Tito, newly assigned Tactical and Security Officer. Thank you for taking the time for this, I am sure it will be chicken soup for you.” He winked “Or piece of cake if you prefer.”

He gestured to the bench, pointing to the phasers. “I believe you know the drill Commander. Let’s begin with the Type one if you please.”

"Chicken soup." Annoyed as she might be about running the certification again, Angel couldn't help being amused by the new phrases she was learning. And she liked chicken soup better than cake anyway. "All right, I hope you're watching." The type one phaser was so familiar in her hand when she picked it up, the weight perfectly balanced for easy shooting under duress. And it was so easy to take apart. Within seconds of picking the weapon up, she'd dismantled it, pausing just long enough for Vitor to register that it had been fully taken apart before she re-assembled the weapon and checked its alignment. Knowing she had plenty of time to spare, she took her time leveling the weapon at its assigned target and fired, as close to center as could be expected in such a time crunch. "If I were to guess that Enalia was first for this and she treated it like a game, would I be close to correct?"

Vitor smiled and shrugged. As he expected the Commander's first run was well above average. "I don't know how well the Captain performed, but needless to say you started well Commander. I assume you are quite familiar with the Security department?"

"I ran the security department until I was promoted after the death of our prior executive officer." Angel laid the type one phaser back down on the table, mindful of the rules of the certification and not picking up the second weapon until told to do so. "So I might not know all the new people who've come aboard, but the department itself... I know it pretty well."

"I suspected that. Whenever ready Commander, the type two please."

A little bigger, but same basic design. Angel was more familiar with it than others might be; the type two had often been her choice of phaser pistol for away team duty. True, she didn't often take them apart in the field, but she'd done it often enough at her desk when one had malfunctioned. Within a few seconds of how long it had taken her to dismantle and re-assemble the type one, she slapped the type two's cover back in place, aimed, and fired at the second target. The shot landed just left of center, barely off the bulls-eye.

"Very good Commander." Vitor added the notes to the PADD and looked at the rifle on the bench. It has been a few years since he used one and if it wasn't for the Commander's certification he would have taken it to fire a few shoots, just for old time sake.

"When ready you can start with the phaser rifle."

Angel had a soft spot in her own heart for rifles of all types, and she couldn't help grinning at the look Vitor gave the one lying on the bench. This was the only weapon that as she picked it up and began to disassemble it, she handled it with a loving - though still lightning quick - touch. The rifle was also the one she took the longest to put back together, though she was still well within her assigned time limit as she brought the reassembled rifle up to her shoulder and fired, exactly dead center on the designated rifle target. "There's a reason I like the rifles best," she quipped as she lowered the weapon and laid it back down. "Maybe they're not always the right tool, but they sure are more fun." And easier to aim, though she kept that bit to herself.

Vitor nodded. He also had a soft spot for the rifle, even if most of times he used them it didn't went well. He finished the evaluation on his PADD moving forward from those memories. "I also like the rifle, it's been too long since I fired one..." He looked again at it and shook his head as he offered a forced smile to the Commander. "I am sorry, I don't mean to waste any more time then you already have Commander. Congratulations, consider yourself certified."

"Hey, you're just following orders." Angel smiled a little. "Go a few rounds with the rifle before you call your next certification down. Doubt your boss will mind you getting a bit of practice, and part of the joy of working security is playing with the toys once in a while."

Vitor laughed. "I agree, but I prefer to call them tools." Shaking his head. "I will practice later. It was a pleasure meeting you Commander."
